Richard Johnstone-Bryden is a professional maritime author, naval historian and photographer who regularly contributes to newspapers, magazines and TV projects. Based in the South of France near the Principality of Monaco, he undertakes assignments across mainland Europe and the UK.
Richard’s magazine features include boat reviews, charter guides, regatta reports, biographies, practical step-by-step guides, corporate profiles, destination guides, book reviews, historical topics as well as articles about major restorations. The majority of this work has appeared within the UK’s leading specialist magazines including Classic Boat, Motor Boat & Yachting, Motor Boats Monthly, Practical Boat Owner, Sailing Today, Water Craft, The Boatman, Anglia Afloat, All At Sea, Warships International Fleet Review, Warship World, The Field, Woodworking Crafts, The Woodworker, Practical Woodworking and Canals Rivers & Boats. He has also written for the magazine Discover Britain about the UK’s historic ships and aircraft and recently had his first feature published in the French magazine Chasse-Marée.
Through Richard’s photographic work he has built up a photo library that includes images of boats (modern, classic, super yachts, power & sail), warships, merchant ships, regattas, boating personalities, inland waterways, harbours, seaside resorts, coastal erosion, historic buildings, piers, museums & aircraft. Many of these images have appeared in books, magazines, newspapers, brochures and websites.
In addition to his conventional editorial work for publishers, Richard undertakes photographic and written projects for commercial organisations to record major projects. For long term construction / restoration schemes, he can be commissioned to take photographs of all the key stages from the initial proposal through to completion. For those organisations wishing to produce a commemorative book or magazine supplement, Richard can be commissioned to write the text as well. Depending on the client’s requirements, he can also undertake the necessary research including interviews with key members of staff. Richard was employed in 2008 by SBM Offshore to work alongside the editor of the company’s official history which was published in 2009. Richard has also contributed to a number of in-house publications produced by maritime organisations including the Royal Navy’s annual publication Broadsheet, The Portunus Club Magazine for P&O Cruises and Seafarer News for the Marine Society & Sea Cadets.
